From a pre-wedding session during the ‘Beast from the East’ to a wedding at St Paul’s Cathedral in London – what an adventure!
Our first outing together started with a phone call from Claire and Ben wanting to have their pre-wedding session during one of the worst storms to hit the UK in years – ‘The Beast from the East’. My thoughts……. That sounds like a great idea, let’s do it! And you know what? We had such a great time despite being obviously cold. I remember asking C&B to sit down in the snow as I tracked back to get a better composition and falling into a snow drift – so much fun! Claire and Ben seemed right at home in the winter conditions (-10). Their pre-wedding session turned out really well and captured their true personalities perfectly.
It wasn’t long before their wedding at St Paul’s Cathedral in London was appearing on my calendar – I was really excited for them. I travelled down the day before to make sure I could scout the area and St Paul’s before the wedding. The cathedral certainly lived up to my expectations, such a grand building steeped in history.
On the day of C&B’s wedding I was with Claire and her bridal party in Rush on Ludgate Hill, overlooked by St Paul’s just 200 yards away. I captured Claire having her hair made up and the pre-fitting of her cathedral veil, everyone was really relaxed and excited. I continued my bridal prep at The Grange St Paul’s, where Claire was staying, then met with Ben at St Paul’s Cathedral. Ben too was really relaxed as I took some portraits of him and some documentary pictures as he met with guests in the crypt of the cathedral.
The morning flew by! The videographer and I were poised waiting for Claire to arrive by a black cab accompanied by her dad. This series of photos are really lovely from Claire’s arrival to being led down the stairs to the Crypt of St Paul’s to get her first glance of Ben. The ceremony looked and sounded incredible, such an intimate space!!
The wedding party gathered on the south steps of St Paul’s to celebrate Mr and Mrs Burrows as they exited the large doors. After some group shots, a great portrait session dotted around St Paul’s – including the Millennium Bridge (love this pic!!) – we headed to Paternoster Chop House where First Dates is filmed. Claire and Ben’s arrival was met with great cheers and champagne. Delicious food and drinks was enjoyed by all on what was a sunny day and no reception is complete without the bride and groom having a game of ping pong outside after cutting the cake – awesome!
We finished the day by having some more portraits on the south stairs as the sun was starting to set over London. These steps are so famous after Princess Diana walked up them in 1981 for her wedding to Prince Charles, with her 25-foot train trailing behind her. The main doors dwarf you and make for some incredible atmospheric images to show off the grandeur of St Paul’s Cathedral. After a few pics here it was time to say farewell to C&B as my coverage was coming to an end.
What can I say about Claire and Ben? They’re such an adventurous couple, nothing seems to faze them. This was soon apparent when they asked to have their pre-wedding shoot in some seriously cold conditions on The Roaches. Getting married at St Paul’s Cathedral could be a little daunting for some couples, but C&B took it in their stride and looked like they were enjoying every moment. Thank you guys for trusting me as your wedding photographer, it’s been a momentous journey 🙂.
