Natural Wedding Photography at The Ashes Barns – Annie & Ollie
I’ve had the privilege of photographing many weddings at The Ashes Barns in Staffordshire, and each one is beautifully unique. You might wonder how that’s possible. While the season and weather play a role, it’s the people—their emotions, personalities, and stories—that make each wedding at this stunning venue so special.
Natural Wedding Photography at The Ashes Barns
As a documentary wedding photographer, my focus is on capturing natural moments and genuine emotions. I love documenting the coming together of families, the laughter, the tears, and the heartfelt expressions that make each wedding memorable. These are the moments that truly resonate with my couples.
Annie & Ollie’s Unique Wedding Story
Annie and Ollie brought their own personal touch to their wedding—more on this later. They meticulously planned every detail, selecting their ideal wedding suppliers with care. It was an honour to be chosen as their wedding photographer, to document their special day.
After meeting online for an initial wedding consultation, we had an in-person meeting at a charming tea room in Alton closer to their wedding day. Over tea, coffee, and delicious cake, we bonded and fine-tuned the details for a seamless wedding experience. It was clear we had a great connection and shared many common interests 😊.
A Secret Pre-Wedding Race
A couple of days before the wedding, Ollie messaged me with an unexpected twist—he was planning to compete in a trail running race in Sheffield on the morning of his wedding. It was a secret from Annie! I was in on the surprise and asked Ollie to text me five minutes before arriving at the venue so I could document his arrival. As expected, he showed up in full running gear, covered in mud, with his suit in hand—an unforgettable and truly storytelling moment!
Wedding Morning: Emotional & Candid Moments
After capturing the venue details and coordinating with the wedding planner, I met Annie, her mum, and her bridesmaids. She was relaxed, enjoying the excitement leading up to the ceremony. A heartfelt moment unfolded when Annie’s florist delivered her bouquet—her reaction was pure emotion and happiness. These are the kinds of shots I love, ones that tell a genuine story.
As guests started arriving, I documented the final preparations, including the emotional first look between Annie, her bridesmaids, and her dad—perfect moments to reflect on.
The Ceremony & Confetti Celebration
Soon, it was time for the ceremony. Annie and Ollie’s personal vows were deeply touching, with Annie wiping away tears. After they exchanged rings and sealed their vows, we headed outside for a confetti photo. Guests lined up, handfuls of confetti at the ready, as Annie and Ollie walked through, celebrating and laughing as they were showered with petals. Their reaction and turning back to thank their guests was a beautiful touch.
Natural Portraits & Golden Hour Magic
Following the ceremony, Annie and Ollie enjoyed drinks and mingled with their guests before we moved on to group photos. I kept them back afterward for some natural portraits in the garden by the smaller pond, saving the large lake for golden hour shots later.
During the wedding speeches, Ollie’s best man stole the show with a hilarious take on Ollie’s love for running. At that moment, it was revealed to all the guests that Ollie had competed in—and won—a race on his wedding morning! He was presented with his trophy as Annie laughed in disbelief. A truly unforgettable moment!
As the sun began to set, I took Annie and Ollie to the jetty overlooking the lake—a spot they had loved from our pre-wedding discussions. Bathed in golden light, we captured breathtaking portraits, finishing with aerial shots using my drone along the long driveway.
Evening Celebrations & First Dance
As the night unfolded, Annie and Ollie cut their wedding cake and shared a fun moment feeding each other a slice. The band soon kicked off the party, leading them to their first dance before the dance floor filled with guests throwing some incredible shapes. One of the best live bands I’ve heard in a while (check the wedding supplier tags on my socials for recommendations!).
Before saying my goodbyes, we captured some final evening portraits to wrap up their beautiful wedding story.

Thank you for being the best photographer we could have asked for Wes! Loved reading this and reflecting back on our day as we approach our first anniversary 💕.
