As a Staffordshire family photographer I get the pleasure of photographing many families around the Midlands.  During the pandemic I documented families coming together to enjoy the outdoors again.  It was an amazing time for me as a photographer! So nice witnessing people being outside – feeling free and with their loved ones too!

One family in particular I’ve had the pleasure of photographing for the past 5 years is Sian, Gaz and their two lovely children Oli and Megan.  I first photographed them some four years ago; I remember it well, we had an autumn shoot in Dimmingsdale Woods, near Alton.

This time round Sian and Gaz asked for some family pictures to be taken at their beautiful home and then onto The Roaches, a local landmark to them, just outside Leek.

On the day of the photo session the weather was crisp, sunny, blue skies scattered with big puffy white clouds with a slight nip in the air.  From their family home The Roaches were looking impressive, bathed in light and clearly visible.  Their garden was a great location, not only having The Roaches as a backdrop but having open wooded areas allowing me to create very natural images of them individually and as a family.  Photographing everyone felt very easy-going for me, like hanging out with friends.  Oli and Megan were great fun to photograph, they’ve grown up so much since I last saw them, they have an incredible bond which was really enjoyable to capture authentically.

Their family pictures came together perfectly, Sian and Gaz had really thought about the colours to wear, which complemented the seasonal palette so well.  After taking many pictures of everyone in the garden I felt I had enough to progress to their next chosen location, The Roaches, which is such a stunning rocky outcrop literally a 5-min drive from their home.

Family Photo Shoot On The Roaches

Arriving at the base of The Roaches I knew I wanted to use the large boulders before the wooded area as the colours were perfect; nice copper/brown tones dominated the scenery.  I captured pictures of Oli and Megan enjoying the landscape, clambering on the rocks and running through the tall grasses.  I took selected pictures that I knew Sian & Gaz wanted, using all the beautiful terrain available to us.  The weather and open space around us gave me the option to fly my drone too, allowing me to picture the whole family on a large rock, giving a great perspective to showcase the surrounding scenery and colours.  I took a few more pictures of the whole family walking away from The Roaches, a great way to end the photo shoot.

After Sian and Gaz received all the edited pictures to view I was happy to provide them with two large-scale canvases designed by me.  The largest being 60×36 inches, which is a very big piece of wall art to produce.  I know that they love the final products, having received pictures of them hanging up in their home.  I look forward to photographing them all at another juncture in their lives.  Huge thanks Sian, Gaz, Oli and Megan 🙂
