Mothers Day Family Photography - Stuart Dick & Family

Family photography is a service I offer alongside my wedding and pre-wedding photography and is a busy part of my business. Everyone wants to get back to normality, wanting to update their family pictures or to just get family together on special occasions.

Mother’s Day Family Photography

One of my recent bookings was part of a Mother’s Day gift to photograph a family based in Cheddleton, Staffordshire. Stuart reached out to me as he wanted to have some new family photographs at their home address In Staffordshire. From speaking with Stuart via email he explained he wanted documentary-style images and they lived on a farm which had plenty of areas we could use for some natural outdoor photography. It all sounded perfect, and as a Mother’s Day gift for his partner Andrea was very special too.

On the day of their family photography session I was happy to see the weather wasn’t too bright with some cloud cover, which makes for perfectly-lit portraits – but annoyingly, the wind was picking up. After meeting Stuart at the door he was so welcoming, inviting me into the family home to meet everyone. I mentioned that it may be wise to take some pictures inside first because of the strong wind outside, to avoid ruining everyone’s well-manicured hair, especially mum’s!

I had the idea to swing open one of their patio doors to get some shots from inside looking out into their back yard, which was lovely and rich in colour. This worked a treat with some fill flash and you’d think they were outside the whole time…. We finished off inside with some full family group shots as their barn lounge was lovely, resembling a modern lifestyle studio.

Relaxed, Natural Family Photography

As the wind had died down we decided it would be a good idea to take advantage and get some documentary-style pics outside, making the most of the beautiful outdoor scenery and open space. I always think that outdoor photography allows people to behave more naturally and is best for capturing documentary lifestyle images. As soon as we were outside you could see the change in their youngest daughter, who was now sitting on the grass with a smile on her face. I started building pictures around her with her two older brothers and sister. As Stuart and his family lived on part of the farm there were some really quirky locations that we used, like the disused piggery. These made some great pics!

I finished off with some nice portraits of Stuart and Andrea.

It was lovely photographing Stuart’s family, they were all so welcoming and really embraced the photo shoot ☺️. Huge thanks to you all and I hope the pictures have made Mother’s Day special, with memories for years to come.
