As a Staffordshire family photographer, I’m blessed with beautiful locations on my doorstep that have people travel the breadth of our country to visit.  One location that is perfect for families with pets is Tittesworth Reservoir near Leek, Staffordshire.  Its ease of access, open space and natural habitat are excellent options for a family photography session in any season.

Natural Family Photography

Tom reached out to me as he wanted to have some updated photographs of his family, especially since he liked my natural style of family photography without posing and forced smiles.  Between me and Tom, we tried to narrow down a day with perfect weather (or as best we can in the UK).  We settled on a weekend and it was a lovely summer’s day, with lush green grass, blue skies, and suitably warm enough to wear shorts and a t-shirt.

With all my family photography sessions I like to spend some time getting to know everyone, especially the children without any cameras pointing at them.  I do this so they can get used to me, my voice, etc., and on their level too (it’s not unusual to see me sit down at their eye level).  Once we felt acquainted I asked Tom and everyone to just enjoy the space and ignore me! Imagine you’re on a family day out!  Working from afar on a long lens I could capture them being natural, laughing, running around chasing each other with their dog at their heels.  At times I might offer suggestions to move to a certain area to benefit from better light or to remove distractions in the background.  There was some lovely low sunlight filtering through the trees at one point which made for some great images.  A few mandatory shots of dad launching the eldest into the air were fun to capture here.

Photography that portrays adventure and Fun!

After I spent some time documenting their playful nature as a family I wanted to group them up for some full family shots, including their dog.  I wanted these to be as natural as possible so I normally ask everyone to look at each other and snuggle which always brings out great expressions 🙂.  I suggested to Tom that there was a small stretch of river where the kids could paddle and cool down (this was pre-arranged to have suitable footwear and towels).  We ended the family photography session here after some fun in the water, these again made for some really lovely pics as there was a sense of adventure portrayed in these photos.

Here are a few pics from their family photoshoot, enjoy!  If you’d like to book me to photograph your family, get in touch I’d love to hear from you 🙂
