As a wedding photographer based in Staffordshire I’m incredibly lucky to have some beautiful scenery on my doorstep. The Roaches, a rocky formation near Leek, where I live, is simply perfect for engagement/wedding and portrait sessions. On a good evening you can witness stunning sunsets – the high vantage point and vast skies make it the perfect location.
Penny & Carl, one of my wedding couples for 2015, loved the idea of a sunset shoot up by The Roaches, especially as Carl proposed by The Mermaid Pool. If you’re local then you’ll know where I’m referring too, if not here’s a link to the infamous pool’s history – click here.
We planned the engagement session in June, ideal because it’s warmer in the evening and the weather system can create some impressive clouds, helping with a colourful sunset. I met with Penny and Carl at The Three Horseshoes, a lovely wedding venue I’m happy to be working at this year 🙂 From here The Roaches is a five-minute drive. Before we set off I wanted to take a couple of portraits of the happy couple with The Roaches as a backdrop, a great starting point for their engagement session. As we were driving to our first location I could see the sun bursting through the clouds, casting huge rays of light, so I made an impromptu stop and asked Carl and Penny to stand in front of the view – we got some amazing silhouettes!! So glad we stopped, I got the perfect shot I’d visualised. After a few more photographs Carl took me to the spot where he had proposed. At this point the sun was dropping into some large clouds and spraying the countryside with a gorgeous yellow light. We jumped out of our cars and cheekily hopped into a field where we took our final set of pictures, and boy did they come out great, helped by a lovely panoramic view of The Roaches. Penny and Carl are the nicest couple to work with, they looked so relaxed and in love, capturing their wedding is a going to be very special, it’s a great honour so thank you to you both.
